Recently, on June 14, 2022, the South African supermarket chain "Shoprite" which consists of about 2943 stores and over 149 thousand employees published a statement announcing that they were victims of a ransomware cyberattack carried out on June 07, 2022 and claimed by the cybercrime group RansomHouse.
The statements show that the cyberattack had an impact on a certain subset of data that could affect some customers who engaged in money transfers in the Kingdom of Swaziland, Namibia and Zambia.
Supermarkets have become a frequent target for hackers, with the largest chain of such stores in Trinidad and Tobago suffering, in May, a cyberattack that caused disruptions in all its points of work throughout the country.
Also during this period, the data of a survey appeared as part of the Sophos report, where organizations in the healthcare sector were questioned.
Thus, the survey reveals a 94% increase in cyberattacks targeting this sector in 2021 compared to 2020, but also the fact that healthcare organizations are doing better and better in terms of the aftermath of ransomware attacks.
The report shows that 99% of organizations affected by ransomware recovered at least some of the data after cybercriminals encrypted it during the attacks, but only 2% of organizations that paid the ransom received all of their data back.
While healthcare organizations pay ransoms the most often, they pay the lowest average ransoms compared to the global average.
